This part of the website allows you to create your own charts and tables using the data we have available on those in paid employment in the sector. It is the same data that is used in the SSSC’s annual reports on the sector’s workforce. You can find a list of definitions to help you with any terms that you haven't heard before. Click the need some help link on the right to learn how to use this page.

Please note that the 2008 data in the explore the data section does not include figures for the number of childminders in work that year. This is because the data was only available to us at a national level and could not be broken down by local authority area. The figure for childminders in 2008 was published in the workforce data report for that year and was 5,580. This will add to both the headcount and number of services (each individual childminder service has a single childminder).

 

Please note that a revision was made to the 2018 figures with the publication of the 2019 data. The revision was in day care of children and led to an overall increase of around 100 staff. Please see the 2019 workforce data report for more information.

 

Please note that a revision was made to the 2019 figures with the publication of the 2020 data. The revision was in housing support/care at home and led to an overall decrease of around 80 staff. Please see the 2020 workforce data report for more information.

Select any combination of area, year, employer type and sub sector from the drop-down menus and click Apply to generate a series of charts giving an overview of the data filtered by those selections.

The charts can be further filtered and/or switched between column and pie charts by clicking on View options above the relevant chart. You can hover over the charts to get more information on the data points.

Notes

  • All data is rounded to the nearest 10 (using unbiased rounding), therefore manual summing of the rounded figures may not match the output.
  • Cells returning a count of five or fewer will appear as 0.
  • Employee characteristic data is scaled up from possibly incomplete responses. If the response level for a combination of filtered categories is lower than 50% data will be suppressed, and a warning with be presented.

Improvements to data methodology over time mean that figures may not be directly comparable between years. Please see our publications for more information.

Child minder data is not available for 2008. Overall figures may be lower than published in this case.
