This report presents data on the whole time equivalent (WTE) number of social workers and social work vacancies in local authority social work services at June 2025. It is the fifth of our half-yearly reports on practising social workers (that is, main grade social workers and senior social workers).

The 2024 Scottish Social Service Workforce Data Report has been revised and reissued.

There was an error in the original and revised version of the report that affected Table 12 and 13.  The 2023 and 2024 stability index data in the report tables and in the accompanying excel tables was incorrect.  The data was corrected and we have republished the report and tables today (14 November 2025).

The 2024 Scottish Social Service Workforce Data Report has been revised and reissued.

There was an error in the version of the report published on 30 September 2025 in Table 34. The Public Staff Headcount and Total Staff Headcount was undercounted by 50.  This error was not present in the data tables (xlsx, csv and ods).  The report was corrected and republished on 07 October 2025.

The report was originally expected to be published at the end of August, however, there were significant delays in receiving all the data this year, which led to publication being pushed back by a month.
