Change to naming of Eilean Siar (Western Isles)

30 Aug 2016

Previously, the Western Isles council area was referred to in Gaelic as Eilean Siar as encouraged by government guidance. New guidance advises that it should now be Na h-Eileanan Siar. We now use this name in our publications; previous publications will not be amended unless they are updated as part of a time series, for example the interactive visualisations. As a result of this change, the area now appears between Moray and North Ayrshire in tables and charts.

The change to Na h-Eileanan Siar ensures we follow the official name in legislation, as listed in the Standard Geography Code Register. For further guidance on standard geographical names in Scotland – please refer to the Standard Geography Code Register.
