New Workforce Skills Survey

What skills do workers in social services need? Is the training available and easy to access? What is your experience of finding skilled staff? Do you expect skills needs to change in the future?

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) is beginning work to produce a new Workforce Skills Report (WSR) which examines the demand for skills within the sector as well as the supply of skills to it. The aim is to help ensure that the provision of skills better meets demand. The work will look at current needs and provision as well as future demands. The Position on Recruitment, Retention and Workforce Planning in the Social Service Workforce in Scotland

On behalf of the Social Work Services Strategic Forum the Office of the Chief Social Work Advisor (OCSWA), Scottish Government has commissioned a study to provide an in-depth view of the issues and challenges that the social care sector are facing with recruitment, retention and workforce planning.  This will inform our work to progress a number of actions in Social Services in Scotland: a Shared Vision and Strategy 2015-2020 which was launched last year.  It also builds on recent work that the Coalition of Care and Support Providers in Scotland (CCPS) and Scottish Care have conducted with frontline staff.

Publication of LA post type data

We are pleased to announce that the breakdown of LA post types for years 2008 to 2014 was published on Wednesday 9th March (available here). The spreadsheets present headcount and WTE (whole time equivalent) data of all filled posts in local authority social work services where those employed do not work in a registered care service. This therefore covers staff working primarily in field social work services.
